DTV is the only Canadian Catholic program to honour Mary. Mother of God, Mother of Jesus, a central figure in Catholic teaching and in the lives of everyday Catholics around the world. Devotion to Mary under the title of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) is a world-wide Redemptorist ministry mandated by Pope Pius IX in 1866.

The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as the Redemptorists, was founded in 1732 by St. Alphonsus Ligouri of Scala, Italy; today its 5,300 priests and brothers serve in 78 countries.

St. Alphonsus was an accomplished artist, musician and writer, eventually published in 70 languages and through 20,000 editions of his works.

A doctor of the Church for his foundational work in moral theology, St. Alphonsus was also devoted to Mary; the order he founded would be dedicated to her and to her example of modesty and humidity as Redemptorists undertook their charism of compassion and service, working and living with the poorest of the poor.

As early as 1840, the Redemptorists began their mission in Canada, eventually taking responsibility in 1881 for St. Patrick’s OMPH Shrine Parish on McCaul Street, Toronto. Since then, the parish has offered Wednesday OMPH devotions attracting thousands every week. The Wednesday Devotions are a feature of many parishes across Canada, many in fact named for OMPH.

Known as The Global Madonna, her iconic image can be found everywhere in the world where there are Catholics, in their homes, schools, and parishes.

Every week DTV on VisionTV and Salt+LightTV continues the tradition of the Wednesday Devotions, urging viewers to attend in-person services while offering an alternative for those unable to attend a parish Church.
